What Does Ecommerce Website Development Actually Include?

Ecommerce website development means building an online store that shows products, takes payments, ships orders and issues invoices, then keeping it fast, secure and easy to find on Google.

Website development for ecommerce goes well beyond a good-looking homepage. The parts behind the storefront decide whether orders arrive and payments settle.

Mobile-first storefront

Designed for the phone first, then scaled up to desktop.

Catalogue and search

Variants, filters and fast product search.

Cart and checkout

Few steps and saved details, so buyers finish.

Payments

UPI, cards, wallets and EMI through trusted gateways.

Shipping

Courier rules, PIN-code checks and order tracking.

GST and invoices

Tax rates, HSN codes and invoices set up.

Search-ready structure

Page structure and product data Google can read.

Security and admin

Backups, safe settings and an admin you can run yourself.

Store types

Which Type of Online Store Does Your Business Need?

A store for ten products and a store for ten sellers are different projects. Find yours below.

Brand Store for Your Own Products

For manufacturers and direct-to-consumer brands who want to own the customer, the pricing and the data.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Large Catalogue Store

Hundreds or thousands of products with sizes, colours and filters. Clean product data matters more than flashy design.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Wholesale and B2B Store

Dealer pricing, minimum order quantities, repeat orders and invoices for registered businesses.

WooCommerce, or Shopify for simple rules

Multi-Vendor Marketplace

Seller sign-up, commissions and separate payouts. A bigger build, so we scope it before we quote.

WooCommerce multi-vendor

Subscription Store

Refills, boxes and memberships, where a failed renewal or a late delivery costs you the customer.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Own Store for Amazon and Flipkart Sellers

Keep your marketplace sales and build a store where you set the rules and keep the customer details.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Not ready for full checkout? Start with a catalogue and WhatsApp ordering, then add checkout later without starting again.

Platform advice

Shopify or WooCommerce? An Honest Answer for Indian Sellers

We build on both, so our advice carries no platform bias. Read our pages on Shopify development and WordPress development for the detail.

ShopifyFast launch, low upkeep

Choose Shopify when speed and simplicity matter most

  • Hosting, security and updates are handled for you
  • Quick to launch and easy to run without a developer
  • You pay a monthly plan plus any paid apps
  • Customisation stops where Shopify's rules end

Our view, from building on both

WooCommerceFull control, content-led

Choose WooCommerce when you want control and content

  • It runs on WordPress, so your blog and store sit together
  • No platform transaction fee, only the gateway fee
  • You choose the hosting and keep it maintained
  • Too many plugins slow it down, so we keep the list short

How we decide with you: three questions

1

How many products and variants do you sell?

A small, clean catalogue suits Shopify. Complex rules and custom pricing often point to WooCommerce.

2

Who will run the store day to day?

A small team with no developer usually does well on Shopify. A team at ease with WordPress can use WooCommerce's control.

3

What will you need in two years?

Content, custom features or B2B pricing may point to WooCommerce. Steady order growth suits either one.

The India catch most agencies skip: gateways and fees

Shopify Payments is not available in India. Indian Shopify stores use third-party gateways such as Razorpay or PayU, and Shopify may add its own transaction fee on top of the gateway fee, depending on your plan. Check Shopify's pricing page for current figures, and we go through them with you while we quote.

Neither platform issues Indian GST invoices on its own, so we set that up on both.

Still unsure which platform fits your store?

Built for the Way India Shops: The Store Setup Checklist

A store copied from a foreign template misses what Indian buyers expect. These six setups are where we spend our time.

About 300 milliononline shoppers in India, according to a BCG report covered by ANI in April 2026.
About 70%of shopping carts are abandoned worldwide, per Baymard Institute research. A confusing checkout is where many sales are lost.

UPI, Cards and Trusted Gateways

Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and CCAvenue connected, with UPI up front on mobile and a checkout that keeps the cart when a payment fails.

Cash on Delivery Without the Return Losses

An OTP or WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch, plus an online-payment option, filters out careless and fake orders early.

GST-Ready Invoices From Order One

GST rates, HSN codes and GSTIN capture, linked to your accounting tool. Your accountant confirms the rules for your turnover.

Shipping, PIN-Code Checks and Tracking

Shiprocket and Delhivery connected, delivery checks by PIN code and a tracking link for every order.

WhatsApp Updates and Cart Reminders

Confirmations, dispatch updates and reminders on the app customers already open all day.

Google Merchant Center and Product Data

Titles, images, prices and stock details prepared, and your feed set up. Pages not indexed? Read how to fix "crawled, currently not indexed".

Ready for AI search

Built to Be Found by Google and by the AI Assistants Your Buyers Ask

Shoppers increasingly ask Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity what to buy and where. These tools read the same signals your store already publishes: clear product data, plain policies and pages they are allowed to crawl. We build those signals in from the start, and our SEO team keeps them current.

What an assistant reads on your product page

  • Product name, brand and category
  • Price in ₹ and stock status
  • Delivery and return terms
  • Ratings and reviews from real buyers
  • A plain-language description
  • A fast page it is allowed to crawl

An illustration of what we set up. No one can promise a mention in an AI answer.

Product data machines can read

Clean titles, prices, stock and brand details, with product structured data and a Google Merchant Center feed.

Policies in plain words

Shipping, returns and payment pages an assistant can quote correctly.

AI features only where they pay back

Smarter search, product recommendations or a chat assistant, added when they solve a problem you have.

How We Build Your Store, Step by Step

No pitch and no template dropped over your logo. Six steps, in this order.

  1. Discovery call, not a pitch

We learn what you sell, who buys and what went wrong with earlier stores or agencies.

  2. Review of your store or market

Wasted spend and quick wins on a live store, or a study of your market and competitors if you start fresh.

  3. An honest recommendation

Platform, scope, what to build first and what can wait. We say so when something will not pay back.

  4. Design approved in Figma

You approve the design on screen before any code is written, so changes are quick and cheap.

  5. Build, catalogue and migration

Store, products, payments, shipping and invoices set up, and your data moved if you are switching.

  6. Launch, then cleanup and checks

Unused apps and plugins removed, code and CSS cleaned and quality checks run, so the store stays quick.

Moving From Another Platform? Keep Your Rankings and Your Orders

Done carelessly, a move breaks links, loses data and drops rankings. Done with a plan, customers barely notice.

What we move

Products and variants
Customer accounts
Order history
Pages and blog posts

We move stores from website builders, Shopify, WooCommerce and older custom builds. Our SEO team handles the redirect map and the checks after launch.

How we protect your rankings

  • Map every old URL to its new address
  • Set up 301 redirects so old links keep working
  • Compare a crawl of the old and new site before launch
  • Keep titles, descriptions and structured data
  • Check Google Search Console after launch

If rankings fall after a site change, see why Google rankings drop.

Plan My Migration
Our promise

You Own the Store: Accounts, Code and Data Stay in Your Name

Some agencies keep the keys, and every future change becomes a negotiation. You should never need our permission to reach your own business.

Your domain

Registered to you, not to us.

Your hosting account

Held by you, with us working inside it.

Your payment gateway

Settlements go to your bank account.

Your Google accounts

Merchant Center, Analytics and Search Console are yours.

Store admin and code

Full admin access, and the code is yours.

Customer and order data

Your customers stay your customers.

Quote and timeline

What Decides Your Quote and Your Timeline

We do not publish prices, because two stores with the same product count can need very different work. Six things move the quote.

Platform choice

Shopify, WooCommerce and multi-vendor builds differ in setup and running costs.

Design depth

A refined theme and a fully custom design are different amounts of work.

Catalogue size

One hundred products is not the same job as ten thousand with variants.

Integrations

Each gateway, courier, accounting tool or WhatsApp link adds setup and testing.

Custom features

Dealer pricing, subscriptions and product builders need extra development.

Migration scope

Moving orders, customers and rankings adds careful work.

Costs owners forget to budget for

  • Domain and hosting
  • Shopify plan, or WordPress plugins and paid apps
  • Payment gateway fees on every order
  • Product photography and writing
  • Maintenance, as a separate Website AMC at an additional cost
  • Digital marketing to bring buyers to the store

What speeds a launch up, and what slows it down

Speeds it upProduct data and photos ready, one person who approves quickly, and payment and courier accounts opened early, since gateways ask for KYC documents.

Slows it downProduct details arriving in pieces, design changes after Figma approval, gateway verification delays and messy catalogue files.

Timelines depend on your store, business and niche. You get a written timeline in the proposal.

Hiring an Ecommerce Developer? Eight Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Whether you pick a freelancer or an ecommerce development company like ours, ask these first. We answer each one for ourselves too.

Can I see stores you built, and speak to their owners?

Why it mattersPast work shows how a store holds up after launch.

What we doWe walk you through our work on a call and answer questions openly.

Who owns the accounts and the code?

Why it mattersIf the agency holds your domain or admin, leaving becomes expensive.

What we doYou own every account and the code from day one.

What is in the quote, and what costs extra?

Why it mattersVague quotes grow. Ask for design, build, integrations and migration to be listed apart.

What we doWe list what is included and what is not. Website AMC is priced separately, at an additional cost.

How do you test payments before launch?

Why it mattersAsk for test orders that include a failed payment and a refund. Many stores skip them.

What we doYou approve the design in Figma before we build. After launch we clean up apps, code and CSS and run quality checks. Tell us what must be checked and it goes into the plan.

What happens when something breaks after launch?

Why it mattersSupport after launch is where many agencies disappear.

What we doWe offer Website AMC for Shopify and WordPress stores. WordPress sites also need security care, so read why WordPress sites keep getting hacked.

Who will I actually talk to?

Why it mattersHidden subcontractors and rotating contacts slow every decision.

What we doYou deal with our own team of 8 or more people, from the first call to launch.

Freelancer or agency: which fits my store?

A freelancer can suit a small, simple catalogue with a clear brief. An agency fits better when design, development, integrations and marketing must work together, and one person leaving cannot be allowed to stall the project.

Red flags that should make you walk away

  • A quote with no itemised breakdown
  • The agency keeps control of your accounts
  • A promise of guaranteed sales or rankings
  • No past work you can inspect
  • No reason given for the platform chosen
  • They will not say who builds the store

FAQ

Ecommerce Website Development: Your Questions, Answered Straight

Is Shopify or WooCommerce better for an Indian store?

Neither wins for every store. Shopify suits fast, low-upkeep launches, and WooCommerce suits custom needs and content-led stores. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so compare gateway and transaction fees before you choose.

How long does an ecommerce website take to build?

It depends on your store, business and niche. Catalogue size, integrations, custom features and how quickly you approve designs set the pace. You receive a written timeline in the proposal.

What decides the cost of website development for ecommerce?

Six things: platform, design depth, catalogue size, integrations, custom features and migration scope. We quote after a discovery call so you compare real scope. Website AMC is priced separately.

Will I own my store and code?

Yes. Your domain, hosting, payment gateway, Google accounts, store admin and code stay in your name.

Can I take UPI and COD?

Yes. We connect UPI and cards through gateways such as Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree, and add cash on delivery with a confirmation step.

How do I reduce COD returns?

Confirm each order by OTP or WhatsApp before dispatch, offer an online-payment option at checkout and show clear delivery details. A confirmation step filters out careless and fake orders early.

Can you move my store without losing rankings?

Yes, when the move is planned. We map every URL, set 301 redirects, keep titles and structured data, and check Search Console after launch.

Do you set up Google Merchant Center?

Yes. We prepare your product data and set up the feed so your products can appear in Google Shopping surfaces. The same feed can support Shopping campaigns run by our Google Ads team.

Will AI assistants recommend my store?

No one can promise that. We set up the signals these tools read: clean product data, plain policies and crawl access you control. Those also help regular Google search.

What do I need ready before we start?

Your product list with prices and variants, photos, logo and brand colours, GST details, and a registered business bank account with KYC documents for the payment gateway.

What happens after launch?

We clean up apps, code and CSS and run quality checks. After that, Website AMC keeps the store updated and working, at an additional cost.

Do you build wholesale and B2B stores?

Yes. We build dealer pricing, minimum order quantities, repeat orders and invoices on Shopify or WooCommerce.
